Candy Floss Caravan

My first ever stick of Candy Floss was eaten at Blackpool Pleasure Beach in 1974. The Seventies were really a decade of Candy Floss colours. Grown ups fought off their fears of the three day week, and the bomb, by dressing in tan suede jackets and sparkly lurex. Kiddies snuggled in staticky beds of orange bri nylon sheets. We’d all go on holiday to places like Blackpool and eat spun sugar swirled round splintery wooden sticks; Candy Floss. It was so much cheaper then, and the flavours were pink or blue.

And now I live in a world where candy floss is called cotton candy, and a caravan is a trailer; and the spun sugar comes in vegan, allergen free, lychee flavour or Earl Grey. Here some clever nostalgia vendor knew that I’d remember my childhood, so they picked up a Bush transistor radio like the one your gran had in the kitchen and a blanket crocheted from wool oddments, because, because, because…

Because there are days when we all need sweet memories.
