… pup on blue steel

I was first drawn to this photo for its breadth of contrasts: the texture of fur and skin against steel and asphalt. The warmth of tone, next to those muted blues and greys. The pup’s resting posture, which mimics the curve of the steel but contrasts with the person’s straight legs, so resolute in their stillness.

In his notes, the photographer tells us he spotted this pair at a gathering to support Muslim friends and neighbors in a time of tragedy. And how beautiful this quiet moment is, despite the raw emotion behind it. How beautiful to show such tenderness, to stand with a community, to linger among many and to share their pain. How beautiful to know the healing that can begin with the urge to bury your hands in wiggling scruff and look into a little dog’s bright eyes.
