nocturnal equipoise

‘The truth is balance, but the opposite of truth, which is unbalance, may not be a lie.’ ~ Susan Sontag

Let’s not have that debate again: the argument about the lies that a camera will inevitably tell. If we are thinking about the truth of photography, about the photographer’s implied responsibility to document what they see, then we should remember that it is all about balance and counterbalance; a certain equipoise. We can suck all the colours from the circus world, we can burn the shadows and dodge the lights, we can even flip “the truth” sideways. For tonight the well balanced truth is all twisted up in that woman’s limbs.
