The first thing you do is lift your foot. Breathe in. Put your foot down in front of you, first your heel and then your toes. Breathe out. Feel your feet solid on the Earth. You have already arrived.
Thich Nhat Hanh – How To Walk

Just to be clear, Debra Broughton and her husband Ron don’t take long walks every weekend. It just seems like they do. And folks, I’m talking serious walks.

…a hike up Loughrigg
…the end of 20 miles we were tired and thirsty
…a 15 mile hike on a wet humid day, slithering along limestone dales
…an 11 mile hike above Todmorden
…a long hard 30 miles for my pint of Celtic Gold

And at the end of those walks, a proper pint and a photo. Each and every week, a pint and a photo, and often a review of the pint. Thirty-four weeks in a row (plus an extra 31.5 week pint and photo for their anniversary).

These photos make me ridiculously happy (you should see the entire set). But this needs to be said: Debra and Ron could teach Thich Nhat Hanh something about walking. Yes, with every step you’ve already arrived. But you’re not truly there until you’ve got that pint in your fist. The smile tells you the truth of that.
