Black Boot

There is something distinctly sinister about one abandoned shoe. Who loses just one shoe?

Surely, you’d feel the lack of footwear. You’d notice a limp and glance down at your unshod left foot. If you were conscious – if you were alive, surely you’d know.

So look again at this scene and pay attention to the beautifully empty negative space. Trace the outline of the submerged trouser leg of an unwary businessman who lost his footing as he stepped out of the Old Thameside Inn one cold Friday night. Did he turn right instead of left and land on the sandy shore of the Thames, lost in an alcohol haze. Or was he hustled to the shore and pushed into the sinking London sands while hen parties and people on work nights out staggered past, oblivious to the dark deeds below.

If you dig deeper, what will you find?
