persistence
I walked on Ocean Beach one day in the fog, it is very often foggy on Ocean Beach, and the waves are very often gnarly which means bad, or good, depending on who you ask. But this particular day you couldn’t really see the surf because the fog was so thick. A dog stood woodenly, motionless on the shore, eyes fixed out to sea, waiting for his surfer to return. I could tell from the footprints in the sand that the dog had watched his human rush into the water and waited fixed to the spot: loyalty, obedience, persistence. When the surfer owner emerged from further down the beach and called, the dog gave a momentary double take as if betrayed that they hadn’t returned to the previously agreed meeting place.
This is a different beach, a different surf, a different dog, and I wonder if it was the photographer or the dog who had to show the greatest persistence.
