Xmas in NY

The trouble with holidays is that we’re all supposed to believe in some kind of magic.

Here’s the thing: the magic doesn’t just come from faith or hope or belief. It comes from us. It’s work that we do together, something that we practice. And it can be a royal pain in the neck, but by golly, we do it on purpose, and we’re not going to stop.

Every single year, we haul out the tchotchkes, we hang up the twinkly lights, and we put one foot in front of the other. We stay up too late decking the halls with fingerprints and dirty boot-slush and dents in the paint. We bake until we’re sick of it and we sing songs of backaches, but not too loudly, lest it wake up the children. Oh, the children.

In the end, we let our hearts crack open a little more, and we still love the jerks who hurt us, even if we don’t say so. We let our hearts be light, and we hope for better things to come. Because that’s what we do.

That’s a lot to believe in. And for me, it’s enough.
