Nevicata Notturna

Buried in Winter,
How unexpected it is
Between the trees
To imagine flowers
In the fallen snow.

There is a sort of purity in falling snow that transcends geography and time. The sight of snow falling at night was as familiar to the 10th century poet Ki no Tsurayuki as it is to us. A thousand years after Tsurayuki lived and died, we’re still transfixed by the image of white flakes drifting down in the dark of night.
