Winter Branch

There is something  indecent about these pink blossoms when compared the the waxy tones of the Christmas rose. It casts a blushing shadow over the wan snowdrops just coming into bloom in European gardens.

How can it be so pretty-in-pinkly cheerful while we are still in the depths of winter?

This stubborn plant refuses to accept that it is not rosy-cheeked summer. That there are not warm seas to swim in, or luscious long grass to lay in, whiling away a midsummer hour with a battered copy  of The Weirdstone of Brisingamen, a book that you have tried and failed to read every year since your fifteenth birthday.

This shade of pink – the colour of the boldest carnations. This audacious pink is pulling us forwards. Reminding us that even though there may be winter snows and blizzards ahead, the world will keep on turning. There is a life to be lived, another summer to be savoured. And this is a glimpse of the good things yet to come, just as soon as winter thaws.
