Mary Jane 2040

In Winter

“There is a road from the eye to the heart that does not go through the intellect.”

Sometimes other people say things better than you can possibly say them yourself. I often — too often — attempt to impose some sort of intellectual basis for things that move me. I could point to the achingly pure geometry of this photograph, to the softness of the focus that can’t — and doesn’t try to — mask a deeper strength, to the quiet suggestion of a smile that I realize may only be my imagination. I could enumerate any number of reasons I love this photograph.

But G.K. Chesterton was right. There is a road from the eye to the heart that does not go through the intellect, and the unconscious grace and beauty of this young person has turned me into a willing passenger.
