Nuuttipukki

Juist (II)

Come with me and run through the dunes, slithering and sliding down towards the beach. But do it carefully. Do not disturb the spiky marram, those tenacious salt-loving grasses with roots that that keep the dunes from disappearing on each turning tide.

Tiptoe barefoot across tidal pools, over ripples of damp sand near the sea’s edge. And then return to the curious lookout on the beach. If you can find your way in – maybe shin up the pole or bring your own ladder – you can shelter inside out of the rain.

There may not be the best of weather – it is the North Sea, after all. But sit for a while and be still. You might spot a dunlin or a hear the mewling of a grey plover. Stay put for the seals are coming. Resist the call of the boardwalk that will take you back to your seaside home-from-home. If you are patient, this lonely beach could furnish you with an experience to cherish for a lifetime to come.
