patio

On the patio there is a shopping trolley but no shopping. The recycling bins sparkle after late winter rain. There are three bicycles, none of them chained up. There are no thieves here – there is the confidence of shared spaces.

This is the organised chaos of communal living, of communities where a certain level of trust is essential. Everyone has their own bin, though they may be adorned with rectangles or circles within squares. Though they may be yellow-lidded, or brown or red.

This is how we get along. Together, yet with enough separation. Order, but with a dash of chaos.
