Scattered plum petals around

Yosa no Buson is one of those 18th century Japanese figures who seem almost fictional. As a young man he left behind his hometown and his given name. He started calling himself Buson, which apparently can be translated as ‘the village that ceased to be.’ He spent a decade or so as an itinerant poet, painter, and calligrapher, wandering mostly alone through the wildest, untamed parts of northern Honshu, Japan’s main island. He considered the poetry, the calligraphy, and the painting as simply different forms of the same observational approach to life. His greatest talent was his capacity to be surprised and delighted in witnessing ordinary moments in daily life.

Buson would have appreciated this photograph.
