惠山古镇 Huishan Ancient Town

I have sat in this very spot and listened to…well, not this very spot, but a spot very much like it, and I could hear…not that much like it, I suppose–less stone, more greenery, but the trees were identic…not quite identical, but there were trees and a boat on the water, and the water was almost still, and the boat was still, and the air was still, and there were birds, swallows, hawking for insects, sliding silently down out the trees, and it was so quiet, so perfectly quiet you could hear the wind passing beneath their wings, just a whisper, just this softest hint of a whisper, like a gentleman adjusting a starched cuff, and just as quick they were gone, and the world made no more noise than a child opening its hand.
