Project 365 (2021) | 29 June

In the long walk home after work, there was a moment of spectacular light. The walk marked the transition from working at home to relaxing at home, a daily ritual he never dreamed he would act out every working day for more than a year.

There would be a thunderstorm, and it was important to be back inside before it hit. Everything as going smoothly, almost too well. His timing was perfect – for once he wouldn’t get caught in it, wouldn’t get drenched and have to reach for a towel the minute he stepped over the threshold. It was all good, until the moment of recklessness, like a tiny act of rebellion. The most reckless he’d been since the pandemic began (apart from once when his face mask was accidentally left at home).

And he thought:

“What the hell, I’ll just stand here and wait for the storm to hit. I’m sick of running away from things. The rain will fall like needles on my skin, and the thunder will crash above me. But so what? And I might decide I’ve had enough and break into a run that will take me all the way home.”

“But just for a moment I’m going to stand right here and see how it feels.”
