afraid to look behind him

Greg Fallis

He is suddenly, painfully self-aware of his body. He tries to calm himself, to regain his almost-remembered shufflestep, to again slide wasp-like through the crowded rain-slick street. Thinking only makes him more awkward. He is genuinely afraid now--afraid to look behind him, afraid to glance at his reflection in a window, afraid of the people around him, where are they going, are they going anywhere at all, or are they like him, moving fear-footed only because nothing good ever comes from stopping.
