a drink he won’t finish

Greg Fallis

The man slides easily through the crowds on instinct and muscle memory, using a shufflestep cadence that would defy pattern-recognition monitors. Long-held habits of which he is unaware make him pause now and then in the street, change directions, stop for a drink he won’t finish, glance at a watch he’s not wearing. He responds to barely perceptible changes in crowd density and tempo, adapting his own rhythm to theirs, alert for the false note that would signal danger.
