large mammal cathedral

Greg Fallis

One of the things I love about the fairgrounds is the architecture of the massive animal barns. The design means the light is almost always indirect and soft, and when the barns are empty there's a hushed atmosphere that always strikes me as ecclesiastical.

Although those upper windows are closed in the winter, the lower area is always open to the weather (and, I suppose, to trespassers). Because of the size of the structures, the weather outside rarely has any effect on the interior. But last week there was a blizzard and the wind deposited an almost evenly spread layer of snow throughout the barns. That snow enhanced the feeling of stillness, making the empty barns seem even more hallowed.
