blue chair yellow wall

Greg Fallis

So I'm walking down the street and I see a small alcove in the alley with this blue chair against a yellow wall. It didn't actually register until I'd walked all the way by it...then I had to backtrack a few steps.

It's just an odd little recessed area that might have been for exterior storage, but it's been turned into a sort of four-chair shelter for smokers (it's illegal to smoke inside). There was a guy smoking there; he looked bit bemused by my interest in the blue chair...but he moved the sand-filled metal bucket they used for an ashtray and pulled his feet back out of the shot. He offered to move the other chair, but I told him I liked it there.

Nice guy, but he didn't want his photo taken. Which was okay, since he wasn't nearly as photogenic as the chair.
