james under the bridge

Greg Fallis

Instead of a Thursday Walk, today I took a Thursday bike ride. I stopped for a break and a drink of water in the shade of an underpass. A few minutes later this guy comes cycling by on an old Schwinn, sees me, stops, and we spend the next fifteen or twenty minutes chattering about the Gulf oil spill and the economy and the foibles of life on the road.

Before I got back on the bike I asked if I could take his photo. He shrugged, which I took as a yes. As I took the lens cap off, James put his sunglasses back on and adopted this stern face. I started to tell him to relax a bit, then decided what the hell...if this is the face he wants folks to see, then this is the face I'll photograph.
