it's tea

It's not that iced tea is a beverage that can only be enjoyed during the summer, it's just that it can't really be enjoyed outside at any other time. At least not by me. Because I don't enjoy anything outside when it's cold. "It" being the weather, of course.

Tea is serious business in my family... I can't remember a time when there wasn't a rather large pitcher of it readily available (or sunning on the porch). My grandfather was diabetic, so sweet tea was out of the question. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I never even knew that there were people who put sugar in their tea until I was over 10 years old, and when I tried it for the first time I thought it was the vilest beverage on earth (other than tomato juice). To this day, I am very particular about my tea -- in order to be any good, it must be unsweetened and it must be lemon-free -- it's undrinkable if it doesn't fit those specifications.

Anyway, one of the summerest of summer activities is sitting on the porch, feet dangling over the edge, drinking a very tall very cold glass of iced tea and smelling the heat in the air.
