Splayed for Display

Penelope A. Millar

So there it is: The Wedding Ring.

Can you see how unnatural it still feels? How the weight still seems too heavy on my hand? The way it makes me notice my every gesture? (I talk with my hands more than anyone who isn't Italian should.)

This is the first ring I've worn with any regularity. I hate rings. My hands sweat more than any other part of my body except maybe my feet, so I can't keep rings or bracelets on comfortably in the summer. I fidget, I take them off and twirl them around, I stuff them in pockets while working or put them down on a surface, I lose them constantly. It's a strange commitment, to wear this one so much, but perhaps that's a good symbol of marriage after all.
