Gaudi Jesus

Jason Hawkins

A close up of the statue of Jesus at the entrance to La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. This is part of a larger Passion façade . The fact that it is made out of concrete shows just how incredible an artist Subirachs, the sculptor is.

the Cathedral that is taking shape in Barcelona is an incredible place to visit. In a world where the here and now, the immediate, is becoming more and more important, La Sagrada Familia is being put together in a way that reinstates the importance of the permanent, the long lasting. That might be seen as a strange statement to make when the medium seen here is concrete, a material that is seen as cheap and easy to demolish and replace. But then again the Romans and Greeks used concrete of a sort in their own construction, and although the historical cultures passed, much of their buildings remain for us to wonder at. And a visit to this wonderful place leaves you feeling that it is going to be around for a very long time.

(Just as long as the high speed rail link that is planned to go under it doesn't rattle the foundations too much...)
