Autumn in New York

Sean Scanlon

One of my favorite standards is 'Autumn in New York' as sung by Billie Holiday. She may not have the greatest range, but the emotion and phrasing she uses is absolutely outstanding. When listening, you can't help but have an emotional response, which is what music has the power to do, and good music should do.

When I converted this to black and white I couldn't help but think back to what it must have been like to sit in a bar down in Harlem during the 40's, a smoky haze wafting through the joint, and listening to Billie perform.
