Light Rail

Linus Gelber

These last weeks I've been pondering motion up ahead; this if-you-wanna assignment to shoot trains started to touch me as the afternoon moved along. At first I shot layers, obstacles, metal over metal and struts tangling in the drenching light. By the end I was thinking of places I want to be, of other oceans and miles between. This is where trains always move me, in the end.

When I lived in Central Italy, years ago, we had a hill-town house over a coastal village with a rail route. The night train from Rome to Paris wailed past with that magic sound in the dark, tugging heartstrings with the promise of motion. I don't think I've ever lived near a train line before, or since.
