Tunnel Vision

Linus Gelber

When I was a kid, my favorite subway thing was riding in the front car of the old Redbird trains and staring out the window at the dark and the lights streaking past, shrieking with unbeatable kid delight. My folks were probably mortified; I was oblivious.

These days the windows are reinforced and screened, for good reason, and on top of that most of them are spray-painted black from inside the conductor's cab. This is the modern world.

This F train had a patch of black paint scraped away. We're heading from aboveground into the tunnel between Smith-9th and Carroll Street here.
