Nature Essays

Small Treasures

Of course, Nature doesn’t make you hunt for every beauty in some out-of-the-way spot or during a short lifespan. Many are hiding in plain sight, overlooked because they are so numerous or so common. Here in New England, for instance, maple trees put on a spectacular display each fall. Hillsides explode with red, orange, yellow, and brown. Millions of leaves create this display, and often, each is a beauty in own right, yet few people stop to appreciate an individual leaf.

The same is true for so many natural beauties. Take a close look at the delicate whelk shells that crunch underfoot on a beach. Pick one up. You will marvel at its curves, its points, and the loveliness of its interior. In summer, when numerous dragonflies dart through the warm summer air, stop to notice the differences among them. One is blue, one is red, one is striped, one is green. Each deserves an appreciative look.
