Suspicious

There were several times when I had the feeling, "you're not from around here." As a long-haired grad student, who remembers geriatric drivers audibly flicking the automatic door lock as I pass in the crosswalk. As a customer in a Japanese shop when a passing yongster stopped in surprise to point and exclaim, "gaijin da!" As a tourist in Romania when a money changer refused to work within the official exchange booth and, instead, tried to fool me with sleight of hand, substituting a worthless stack of bills. I get that feeling more frequently, now, as many turn a resentful eye on passers by, particularly those wearing a mask, as though assessing a threat.
