Select twenty forks. Wait for the light to refine itself, wait until the refined light has become delicate and feathery, wait until the feathery light illuminates the proper patch of floor. Arrange the forks informally in a gentle arc on that patch of floor, lay them out like a line of light cavalry in motion, set them out bright as lances in the sunlight. Add one enigmatic cat. Release the shutter.
How does one create a recipe like that? From where does it come? What sort of process leads to such an original result? If this is where the process ends, where where where could it possibly have begun?
It began with a casual comment about ‘ambiguous forks in the trail,’ an incidental remark in an unrelated discussion. But somehow, that comment sparked an idea and the idea was turned into reality. The path from comment to photograph, from idea to reality, is as enigmatic as a cat, as bright as refined sunlight, as informal as the gentle arc of twenty forks laid out on the floor, and just as lovely.
