schmutzwäsche

I don’t have much of an idea what schmutzwäsche means, so before I go away and google it let me use my imagination.*

To me, the very essence of schmutzwäsche is an origami rose made from tangled bedsheets before they are carried unceremoniously to the laundry. There is an element of childlike playfulness, perhaps the engine of a handmade wooden train rolled up inside at the point, where – if this was a real rose – there would be anthers and stamen, nectar and pollen.

But to be absolutely true to the spirit of schmutzwäsche, this furled-up bedsheet-rose with its sweet wooden nectar at its heart is every inch a real rose. As much as one that you might find by walking outside into the garden and looking among the floral borders.
