Nature doesn’t own beauty. Here is a thing that Hyla Levy does: she finds a sliver of urban reality, she detaches it from its surroundings, she re-frames it, and in doing so, she reveals it in a way that is orderly and linear and yet absolutely abstract.
It’s an acknowledgment of Antoni Gaudi’s famous statement, “There are no straight lines or sharp corners in nature.” But it’s also a refutation of the rest of Gaudi’s statement, “Therefore, buildings must have no straight lines or sharp corners.” We needn’t imitate Nature in an effort to create beauty; we can create other beauties. We can find unexpected beauties.
Nature doesn’t own beauty. Beauty resides in the eye. Hyla’s eye is as sharp as her corners.
