Pre-Game, Citizens Bank Park

Joaquín Andújar, born a few days before Christmas in 1952 in the town of San Pedro de Macoris in the Dominican Republic, signed a contract to be a pitcher with the Cincinnati Reds a few weeks before he turned 17 years old. Over his career he played for four different major league teams, was on the MLB All Star team four times, and won a Gold Glove award. He’s perhaps most famous, though, for something he said:

“Baseball can be summed up in one word — youneverknow.”

It’s true. Youneverknow. Some games are quick, some are glacial. There are long periods in which nothing seems to be happening…unless you look closely. There are moments you know with mathematical certainty that something will happen…but it doesn’t. And sudden, unexpected moments when everything seems to happen at once, at astonishing speed, at different parts of the field. And when it’s over you’re left asking, “What did I just see? Did that really happen?”

That’s the thing about baseball. Youneverknow. It’s one of the reasons kids love it. It’s one of the reasons everyone who loves it stays a kid.
