Poor Brainless Angel

As we age our buried memories resurface.

It pleases me to think of a small child in Toronto, a child who is waiting for the ice rink in their park to reopen for the winter, who enjoys camping, jalapeno popcorn, and who wants a Playstation for Christmas. A child who sees this poor brainless angel, but does not notice it. Doesn’t wonder about the damage, doesn’t project any sense of pain on it, but sees it in the same incurious unbothered way as they see a street lamp. It pleases me to think that one day, years from now, they might recall this place; the way we remember the taste of a discontinued chocolate bar, and they might have a surge of childhood blood whoosh through their heart.
