Dreams I Might Have Had

Let's Not Talk About Sex

Sex is another popular dream. Let's face it, humans have several basic instincts: to survive and to propagate the species. Sure, there may be others, but sex is definitely on the short list of things we instinctively do. Sigmund Freud contributed a lot in the area of combining dream interpretation and sex-he had us all believing that we wanted to have sex all the time and that almost anything you might visualize in your dream state was actually your subconscious looking to, um, "get busy" as it were. Even "innocent" things, like giant bodies of water, trains, or churches, were interpreted by Freud to be items of a sexual nature. While some dream interpreters and modern psychologists believe that he took things a bit too far, there just might be a bit of truth behind the ideas he presented. Especially for those of us who might be a bit shy when talking about sex to our partners, our dream state provides a nice, comfortable place to unmask the taboo-we can safely fill our subconscious mind with visual representations of sex while remaining free from the fear of society labeling us as "bad" or "dirty." This nice, convenient hiding place might make it easier for us to have sexually driven dreams more often than we realize. By having sexually explicit dreams, we might be more prone to forget them before we wake, opting to keep our subconscious "clutter" out of our day-to-day lives.

Then again, some people are just like elephants, they remember everything, and some people are, just like bunnies, always thumping around. Maybe, just maybe, our dreams reflect that instead.
