Dreams I Might Have Had

Further away from home than ever before...

We'd been walking all night. By now we had to admit to ourselves that we where lost. Whatever turn we took, whatever house or building we'd enter, whatever road we might have known...we where lost. We always returned to exactly the same spot ; in fact we where asking ourselves if we had been walking at all !
Everybody we encountered on our nightly walk we'd reach out to and ask for help, for directions. The closer we got to the vaguely familiar human shapes, the more elusive they became. Our quest would prove to be futile. Our efforts in vain !
At one point we came to a dirt road, a track inland a tarred, blackened wooden fence on our right hand side a crumbling red brick wall on the left. We could look over the wall and see a garden of our youth, the mulberry bushes, gooseberries...the rosebushes and old pear trees...the allotment on one side, pigeons sitting on the roof of the pigeon shed.
We could feel the warmth of the sun on our skins, heavy scented summers. Further away from home than ever before...
