Small towns are great examples of politics working for the people. It's a direct link to the democratic process, to executive and legislative and judicial branches of government. Anyone can apply, anyone can be elected; sometimes a few hundred votes separate the winners from the losers. But small towns are notorious for "good ole boy" mentalities, especially in the South. Cronyism can be the norm. Payoffs, hush money, undertable deals, especially in real estate are common. But the fact that a voter has the power to change their leaders, to sway the course, is still inspiring. In this time of a national election, a time of change, that is the most important right that we can exercise. Yes we can.
