Since everyone knows everyone in a small town, it's easy to make enemies. One wrong word, one mishandled trial, one sex scandal, one DUI, and your name is toast. It seems hard to make a name for yourself, but oh-so-easy to ruin your reputation. Local politicians mudsling and slander each other, and usually both parties come out with blood on their hands and mud in their face. Corruption is rampant, even prevalent; good politicians seem almost mythical in occurrence. So much so that most of the time you are voting for "the devil you know", or the "lesser of two evils". Everyone has skeletons in their closet.
