The sense of touch is just as important as fine motor skills in the human hand. The ability to distinguish cold from hot, wet from dry or rough from smooth is an important function. I personally love texture and find it nearly impossible to resist touching things to learn about them. Not a good thing if you are touring a museum. The guards don't like you touching the exhibits.
